Sewage Treatment Plants - Zero Discharge Campus

Water is a precious natural resource gifted by GOD to the mankind, and also one of the Powerful Five Elements of Life Creation. A precious natural resource needs a careful consumption. Knowing this Shri Vishnu Engineering College For Women- Bhimavaram, has incorporated the sustainable environmental protection in its Vision Statement. To achieve this vision the college management always encourages the natural resource conservative practices in running the campus extended in a serene 100 acres of land, 3 km away from the town outskirt of Bhimavaram. The campus has 7 constituent institutes with a total strength of about 15,000 students, out of which of about 4000 are staying in the hostels. To meet the daily needs of the campus a total quantity of about 9 lakh liters per day is required. It is quite obvious that the sewage generated is also high. It is estimated that sewage generated is about 7 lakh liter per day. This sewage ultimately has to reach a natural drain.

In order to provide eco – friendly environment and to ensure zero discharge into the drain, Shri Vishnu engineering College For Women with an extended help of the management applied for   DST, New Delhi to construct a sewage treatment plant to treat the generated sewage. With a kind persue of the proposal honorable DST, New Delhi  has sanctioned a sum of Rs59.866 lakhs for the construction of 2 nos sewage treatment plants, each having a capacity of 200KLD, w.e.f 28/11/14 for a period of 2 years. The total project cost is Rs170.536 Lakhs. The treatment is carried out using Improved Moving bed Bio-film Reactor (MBBR). The sewage collected from the various zones of activity in the campus is effectively collected through a network of drainages and is collected to the treatment plants. The treated sewage (effluent) is being used for gardening purpose thus saving a substantial quantity of fresh water demand.

Sri Vishnu Educational Society has been very interested in dealing with societal problems. In this line we have adopted the maintenance of nearly 2.5 K.M of proposed National Highway road passing in front of the campus. The treated water is consumed in the greenery development within the campus and the adopted sites like the road partition greenery etc.

The methodology includes the use of probiotics along with MBBR technology for the treatment of waste water. Periodically sample will be collected before and after the treatment and analyzed for various important physio- chemical parameter and the same shall be compared with the standard data as per Bureau of Indian standards.
